Are you part time fitness training?
At Mission Tri we are often told or hear about athletes who hit the gym through winter in their off season only to stop when the next season starts.
Think about this. If you train from October to March, five months in total. Over the course of five years that is a total of twenty five months of hard work and training and thirty five months of doing nothing other than swim, bike and or run. You are missing out on a vital part of your training for more than fifty percent of the year!
You would not stop your sport specific training for over half of the year so why do the same for the conditioning and important strength work? You begin your season in great shape coming off the back of a solid winters training only to start picking up injuries and fatigue as the season goes on. Sound familiar?
The key is to vary and cycle your training to ensure you peak for your key races and work on any weaknesses and imbalances that naturally occur. You can reduce and vary the amount of strength and conditioning work you do during the season but do not stop all together.
Become bullet proof with consistent training. Speak with your trainer and coach about what areas you feel are strong and awesome and what areas need to improve. Then you will notice as the weeks and months progress you are starting to resist injuries, getting stronger in each discipline of your sport and have a great looking body as a bonus.
Keep moving and lifting all year round to ensure you are at your best for everyday life and the sport you love to do.
